This course has been designed for newly appointed Rail Technicians or people looking for a change in career who have a mechanical and electrical background. The Vehicle Introduction Technical (VIT) course gives candidates an introduction to each of the various systems on a Rail Vehicle. This will be both a theory and practical course with access to Rail Vehicle components in our dedicated training hall and within a maintenance Depot. Trainees are assessed through general observation, coursework and a written exam.

On successful completion of the course assessment, trainees will be able to:

• Locate and identify the vehicles within the component relevant Fleet.
• Locate, identify and describe the functions of the major systems and equipment on the train(s).        
• Interpret schematic drawings of electrical and pneumatic systems and equipment to facilitate simple fault finding.
• Use the Train Management System to diagnose train status and current faults.
• Describe limits of own actions and authority relating to warranty of components.
• Use laptop and diagnostic software to investigate and eliminate system faults.
